Jake was pretty sure this was the first time Susannah had ever made a statement.  Ironic really.  But he couldn’t tell her that right now, she was repeating the statement.

“We are   not   having   this conversation.”

She put more space between the words, taking time to sip breaths through her pinched pink nostrils.  Jake thought it was also not the time to notice she looked cute when she was angry.  Maybe the answer to her pre-statement questions was yes.  Maybe he just wanted to push the buttons, see what was on the other channels.  The program had been the same for the past two months.

Every suggestion Susannah made or idea she presented appealed specifically to Jake’s tastes or interests.  It was if she was following cues from a 1950s almanac on being the perfect girlfriend.  Even her own opinions were presented as questions seeking approval.  Jake was tired of coming up with all the answers.  Why shouldn’t he have questions of his own?  Why couldn’t he ask about her kid?  What happened to her kid?
