I’m going through the fridge looking for something to eat for lunch.  Why is there a bag of cranberries in the crisper?  It’s March, have they been there since Christmas?  I’m also eating a handful of Organic Kettle Corn, which is dumb because it will ruin my appetite, but someone left it out on the counter.  At least it’s smarter than the Smartfood I succumbed to on the weekend.  I’m not 100% sure but because it’s not organic and they don’t have to label where the corn comes from, chances are it’s GMO corn.  I don’t want to eat it, and I mostly don’t unless a guest brings some into the house.  I don’t want to post another anti-Monsanto screed so why am I mentioning them, again?

Because I keep finding stuff like this on my Facebook page.

Seriously?  I just want to eat food I recognize, even if it doesn’t have a face (that’s for my vegan friends).  I want to understand the ingredient list even if I can’t pronounce some of it.  Latin may be dead but it’s alive and well in the land of labels.

Ok, fine, no one is forcing me to eat anything I don’t want to eat.  I ate the Smartfood willingly.  But how hard is it to make the right choices when poor ones are right under my nose?  Let’s find out.

Monday’s Manifesto is:  Be aware of the things I put in my mouth and call food.  I am going to commit to eating whole foods, prepared by my own hand as much as possible.  I will avoid non-organic, pre-packed and highly processed foods.  I will not skip meals.

*I cannot vouch for the accuracy of either the list or the chart but both are in heavy rotation on Facebook.

**An update on the last MM.  Sigh.  I was late 50% of the time.  Lateness was often in the five minute range but there was one arrival fifteen minutes after the appointed time.  I’m not a bad person, I improved by 50%.  Someone suggested I aim to be early, not on time, maybe I’ll try that.  I am going to keep trying to be better.
