Healthy Love

Why are romantics hopeless? Isn’t hope the basic foundation for romance? It’s the thing you’re pinning your bets on when you take a chance with your heart. You are *actively* hoping for a happy ending.
I am an unabashed romantic. I am also a practical romantic. Is that an oxymoron? Perhaps, I don’t care. I like spontaneity but I resent waste. I love presents but I hate the pedestrian. Give from the heart, but put some thought into it. I once told a boyfriend to stop sending me flowers on Valentine’s Day. We were always on opposite coasts, in two different countries when February rolled around. Spending a small fortune on flowers arranged by a stranger did not make me feel whatever the copywriters were peddling at Hallmark. I’d rather share an extravagant meal when we were together.

Preparing food for the person you love is sexy. Feeding people is love, that’s why newly married folk have a ritual of publicly feeding sugar to each other.
It’s the season of Valentine’s cards full of sweet imagery and super sized strawberries dipped in chocolate. But what about kale? I’d like to see more food groups associated with Valentine’s.

This year, rather than get triggered by the marketing madness, I doodled. I channeled my ideas into a different kind of love note. I’m going to play with graphics and typography, it’s fabulously therapeutic. Who knows I might end up with a side gig, Huiemark cards.
