me as my childhood icon Holly GolIghtly.

8 minutes to reflect on the weeks of navel gazing that has been awards season. I’m not mad about it, the awards are by and for the people being celebrated and they know the true worth of the awards. It’s more than a popularity contest, it’s the ultimate pursuit in the business of Hollywood influencers. But if you’re not in the industry, it’s just a fabulous variety show or glamorous reality show. And what a night if you’re a lover of movies. Almost every year that I watched as a little girl there would be a moment of inspiration and validation of the power of storytelling. At school we little people were given gold stars for work well done, in the Academy, the stars are given little gold people as their prizes. Each Oscar clutched to a chest represents thousands of us adoring fans. Today celebrities have more influence than ever over the shining hordes, and while every podium isn’t the place for politics, as dissemination of information gets muddier I applaud any moment someone drags uncomfortable truths into the spotlight. So while some of tonight’s races are non-races because of a lack of races, maybe we’ll be treated to another rare moment of necessary candor. Thank you Joaquin Phoenix for using your power for good.

To be clear, as a member of SAG-AFTRA, I applauded all the 2020 SAG winners. Were they all my votes? Maybe not, but I agree their work was worthy. Was there work that was overlooked? Absolutely. Am I hopeful that the overlooked at this year’s Oscars will have a moment of vindication? Always.
