It was a hatin’ day.  Corinne knew it as soon as the creamer curdled in her coffee.  grandmamma always told her to pay attention to the signs.  Corinne switched to tea but knew that no matter how positive an attitude she started with, some days were destined to challenge you. She turned the sign in the window to ‘Open’ and went about setting out her shears and combs.

The KISSes Beauty Salon was her grandmamma’s legacy and the acronym spelled out the principles she had passed on to Corinne:  keep it simple stupid.  Corinne told her customers daily, “find the beauty in what you got and save your money for the things you love to eat or do”.  In the three years she’d been in charge she was slowly turning around attitudes.  Mrs. Prudhomme had given up on the full curl set that never lasted past dinner.  Her pixie cut was the envy of Marcie Bynes but Marcie Bynes could wear red lipstick and look chic.  Red lipstick did not suit Jean Procter but she wore it anyway.

When Missy Lamberton walked through the door, Corinne felt her insides curdle.  Missy had returned from picking up her wedding dress in Atlanta with a head full of extra hair.  She was looking at Missy with expectant pride, the way a dog looks after dropping a dead bird at their master’s feet.

8 min @ my desk 3.1.13, inspired by a day at the salon
