The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
8 min @ the kitchen table, TO

‘Your problem Rian is that you think the world owes you.”
“Is that the best you can come up with? That is not even Psych 101, that’s like Psych for Dummies. Barely.” Rian’s ‘Damian’ blue eyes glare through her over-long bangs. “I’ll tell you what I think, Pamela Sue. I think you gave up on your Mary Tyler Moore dream and cashed in your chips to marry my dad. You’ve swallowed this ‘more than you can chew’ lie that you are doing great things propping up this great man, helping him rear his lost cause daughter and somehow making a greater contribution to the world. But you’re choking on the bile of this lie. You can barely breath. Your chest constricts at the truth. Neither my father or I need you.”
Rian’s tongue piercing clicks throughout the rant, but the last few words are hissed out with a strong, clear menace.
