Bethany hates sharing her birthday with her sister. They don’t have a great relationship and it will never change. They have little in common, and other than being twins they are completely unlike. They do not have shared psychic experiences.
Bethany wishes she was an only child, which is what everyone assumed she’d be for the first half hour of her life. And then came Bridget. Bethany has heard the story a thousand times and cringes every time the aunties call Bridget the ‘miracle twin’.
Bridget is the negative to her sister’s picture of perfection. Bethany got all the height, all the cascading curls and all the melanin. Bridget is a molecule shy of being an albino.
Bethany resents her sibling’s shorter, stouter presence and she can’t escape her, they’ve been written about since birth. Next year Bethany goes away to college. She can’t wait to celebrate with something other than mocha cake from Metro. She wants a single serving red velvet cupcake.
