Celine didn’t chat up customers for the tips but she did manage to save a few dollars for herself. She liked the compliments on her English and the taste of camaraderie while she tempted them with the sweets menu. Gilles gave hard stares if it sounded like flirting. She was happy to focus on the women.
Celine was happy to inhale the invigorating scent of coffee and cinnamon all day. Gilles hated the touch of cinnamon on the lattes. He hated any influence that came from America. He hated that they called cafe au laits ‘lattes’ now, but it simplified things for the tourists. Celine used this argument as often as possible when she wanted to implement change at the cafe. It didn’t work as often as she liked but enough to justify repeated attempts. She was careful to not push too much or too often, hard stares easily became hard hands.
