Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra

In many yogic traditions the Guru gives the disciple a mantra.  They are ostensibly tailor-made.  I don’t know, I don’t have a Guru.  But I have had many great teachers and I’ve tried several mantras over the years.

I’ve tried the Ganesha mantra for forty days at a time.  Ganesha is the Hindu God who helps to remove obstacles.  He is also the patron protector of Medical Marijuana dispensers. I don’t think they’re as unrelated as they initially might seem.

In Hinduism and Buddhism, a mantra is a repeated sound or word that aids in concentration for meditation.  Repetition is a powerful tool to learn new habits or create new thought patterns.  I did a weekend workshop centered on personal finances and at the end we were given a collection of mantras.  Well, technically they were affirmations to reinforce the new attitudes to money and money management we’d learned.  We were to repeat them for thirty days.   I still affirm that “money flows to me easily and effortlessly”.  This helps to counter the other mantra, constant and silent, that “making money as an artist is a struggle”.

Recently a couple of friends and I were doing the Wayne Dyer Mantra for Manifestation.  Some of it I liked, some of it I didn’t.  I liked that it wasn’t just about material manifestation, the focus is simply on what you want your life to be.  But the affirmations weren’t resonating for me.  I found myself editing to make it more personal to me.  Which is when I decided to just create my own.  And because it’s specific to me and written by me, it’s easy to remember and I’ve been able to do it successfully every day since the start of the year.

The key is in the Om.  I do a minimum of thirty Oms.  The vibration feels amazing.  My chest feels more open, my breath flows easy and every day I reaffirm the way I want to think about myself and my life.  Anyone can do it, and why shouldn’t they?

Here’s the template:

Om Om Om   I am the creator of my life.  Om Om  I have the power to choose in every moment.  Om Om  –personal affirmation of my life’s purpose—  Om Om Om   I have enough of everything I need and want.   Om Om  –personal affirmation to empower myself—   Om  Om   –personal affirmation to overcome the self-sabotaging voice—   Om Om Om  and so on and so on.

Jai Ganesha!
