There are a lot of people claiming to have a direct line to God. Their conversations don’t leave me with a lot of faith. I mean really, if I called up and the voice on the end of the line was telling me to go kill someone for them, I’d hang up and redial because obviously I had the wrong number. Of course that’s an extreme example.
It’s irritating that so much energy is spent on equal rights, whether it’s based on sex, sexuality, race, or religion, these things should be automatic. Equality should be the golden rule. In fact, it is the foundation of the Golden Rule.
My mother showed me an image once that was a mandala of the first law/tenet/commandment of all the major religions and faiths. Every single one was a variation of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. It is the foundation of all. If we truly committed to make that the foundation, there is no saying what wonders we could build. Instead there are great numbers of us intent on breaking things apart. People are going out of their way to deny other people love; people they don’t know and have never met, but they are rallying and petitioning to take it from them. And it’s not just the denial of the right to marriage, they’re trying to get people fired from jobs and ostracized from society. And this is in the name of Christianity? How does the first commandment reconcile with that level of venality? Often some other bit of scripture is held up in support of the condemnation of homosexuality, but the first tenet cannot be trumped. It is a universal truth, to be embraced not just in the argument for equality, but in every aspect of being human. If God had the brilliance to put the Golden Rule in every major religion, who they hell has been manning the phone to get the message so completely botched?
an excellent post on the topic regardless of one’s faith
