Some days a single word is a trigger. Serena remembers when the twins were five and how she’d give anything for a ‘no word’ day. She challenged them to round after round of the ‘silent game’. One gummy bear for each five minutes of silence, their best time was thirty-one minutes. They were so impressed with their bounty, when they bragged about it they rounded down their victory.
“Daddy, Daddy, we did quiet for anaf anour!”
The hardest part for Serena is remembering their little voices and peculiar phrasing, the breath always an afterthought. She turns up the volume on the tiny device and starts her run. The thudding bass drowns everything out as her trainers hit the pavement on the downbeat. It’s a new playlist courtesy of the young barista at Espresso Eccellente. She had requested heavy beats with no vocals. He’s happy to give her something she needs. He remembers when she used to push a double stroller on her morning runs; occupied one way, empty on the return.
