All That Glitters by Pearl Lowe

8 min on the set of “Rookie Blue”, 1.18.13

Every night you told me a different fairy tale.  You said they were true stories and I should never give up on my dreams.  Everyone gets a happy ending.  I remember my tenth birthday when we both wore tiaras and danced until our legs felt like noodles.  You put the New Order cassette on continuous play and glitter from our hair scattered all over the matted broadloom carpet.  And I believed in the sacred dance of the princesses.

My legs have felt like noodles for seven years now.  But I think this might be the year the curse gets lifted and they find a cure for my broken spine.  I know it’s my own fault for biting that apple and chasing that dragon.  I wasn’t even on a quest to slay it, it was just the thrill of the chase.  Chasing a dream and hoping the next time I woke up a prince would be kneeling beside me.  But I haven’t given up mom, I still believe everyone gets a happy ending.
